To explore, to dance, and become something more than ordinary, something beyond the every day. Imagine a life of luxury and fun, waves, and ecstatic dance moves that set the audience to another toast as vacation and party accompanies experience like never before. This is what is embodied in the well-traveled nomad also known as J the nomad, popular for his worldwide YouTube channel The Ship Life, where he shows the good, the bad and everything in between when it comes to travel. While bringing his own free-footed moves to lighten the mood. Let’s get onboard this story, the story of how J the nomad started this lifestyle that so many dream of, and maybe it’s not ALL sunshine and tequila…

Justin Alexander Scott, performing professionally as “Jthenomad,” embodies the intersection of artistic expression, global exploration, and digital storytelling. Born in Chicago, IL, moving to Tampa, Florida at age seven; Justin is Tampa Bay based and has cultivated a multifaceted career that spans physical performance arts, content creation and travel advice.

While his artistic endeavors form a significant part of his identity, Justin was able to develop enough experience and knowledge to expand his creative pursuits into a career as a travel agent. This professional choice naturally complements his philosophy about travel’s transformative power while also allowing him to continue to spread joy.

Artistic Journey

With over two decades dedicated to dancing, Justin has transformed his passion into a professional pursuit. His performance career extends beyond conventional dance, incorporating the unique visual spectacle of stilt walking. For fifteen years, he has brought these talents to stages across more than fifty countries, making him a truly international performer.

Digital Presence

Justin’s artistic vision extends into the digital realm through his three distinctive YouTube channels, 1 of which is one of the largest cruise ship travel channels in the WORLD:

These platforms showcase seven years of content creation experience, with his cruise ship channel notably ranking among the most substantial in its niche globally.

The Backstory of Poverty to Opportunity

Pre-J the nomad, Alexander came from a family with traditional expectations with a family history of nurses. He was expected to be in the medical field, firefighter, or even the military but was always told to save up because college was expensive. As a child, Alexander was extremely bow legged and had to undergo therapy in order to save him from being hindered for the rest of his life. Alexander started at amusement park Busch Gardens as a dance performer. He already enjoyed street competitions as a break dancer and street acrobat, in the air and on the ground. With dance, the world was no longer about the in between and average expectations, he overcame everything the world had for him. Until it hit him again, as Alexander became a father at 17 years old during his senior year of high school after growing up in the trailer parks of Seffner, Florida with 4 brothers and sisters; where money was scarce and dance would later become the best outlet for escape in the greater Tampa Bay/St Petersburg area.

Fun Fact: J the Nomad is a TWIN, but the older one …by ONE minute!!

“I would never wish young parenthood on any teenager; it was one of the hardest things in my life at the time. There were a lot of ups and downs. The life of an entertainer is very,” J pauses searching through memories for a way to explain this lifestyle before continuing, “like a roller coaster. It’s never consistent. You know living gig to gig. Sometimes money is good, most of the time money is bad”.

J the nomad reveals that he originally dreamed of being a marine biologist with a love for orcas aka killer whales. So, one day in middle school while at Clearwater Beach with his parents he saw a bunch of break dancers, AND he saw they were making money. With hopes of paying for his way to college and liking what he saw, Alexander befriended the dancers and began to learn. He remembers having very little places to practice, recalling the heated tennis courts with unforgivable ground, ripping his hands, and flipping on the tall grass that lined the sides of the park, pushing through whatever it took to be better. Despite these risks, he has never received serious injury or broken any bones.  Over time, Alex began to become J the nomad as he realized that Tampa has one of the best talent scenes for break dancing in the world.

It was through his dance crew that he got his first job as a dancer so J emphasizes” Your network is your net worth. There are people out there that have all the skill and talent in the world but if you don’t know the right people or have the communication skills to meet those people to get you in a higher place. It will most likely never really happen for you”.

Following Busch Gardens Alexander got a job with the Harlem Gold Trotters from NYC for 2 years as a break dancer. Alexander says to think basketball games meet WWE for reference, they have been around almost a century. He was then promoted as international tour manager where his desire to travel was finally met and the beginning of the rest of his career started. The Sacrifice for The Dream

J the Nomad fell in love with a young woman and was married for several years before going through a heart-wrenching divorce which has thoroughly taught him the lesson and the value of the people and relationships in your life. The need for intimacy despite the chase for fun. J talks about the loneliness of his career despite having such incredible experiences, one of his favorites being Antarctica (orca whales!!! Check out his YouTube J the Nomad or Nakedlyunderconstruction for insights). Regardless of the hundreds of interesting and multi-cultural people around him there is nothing quite like being known and enjoying experiences with someone else you have a connection with, to share those memories. He has also sacrificed a lot of time with his son as a result but does not see it as a wrong move but rather a necessary one as he is still a strong part of his son’s life if not a daily part. There are many fathers who sacrifice time with their children in order to follow their dreams and do their careers from businessmen, actors, doctors, sports players, and most definitely travelers.

Personal Philosophies Born through many Footsteps

Justin’s worldview centers on two core beliefs that guide his artistic, professional and personal journey:

1.       “Travel is the greatest teacher” – a testament to knowledge gathered not in libraries but in the living classrooms of many countries throughout the world, where lessons come wrapped in unfamiliar languages, customs as textbooks, and strangers as professors.

2.       “As long as you’re working hard and trying to do the right thing, life will put you where you need to be” – a philosophy not of passive fate but active faith, where effort and ethics form the compass for navigating life’s uncharted waters.

Future Expectations & Summary

Through performances that defy gravity and content that defies borders, J the Nomad is leaving his mark while his own personal journey’s leave their mark on his soul, but all worth it in the end to fulfill this purpose that has been laid before him. Tune into his YouTube channels to stay up to date about travel events, where to go and how to get there, and just maybe with the right combination of artistic talent, chosen opportunities and time grown experience you can make your travel dream like this come true, just don’t forget everything comes at a price but it just might be worth it.
